Green Livin John Muir the naturalist, writer, conservationist and founder of the Sierra Club.

Who was John Muir?

John Muir (1838-1914) was America's most famous and influential naturalist and conservationist. He is one of California's most important historical personalities. He has been called "The Father of our National Parks," "Wilderness Prophet," and "Citizen of the Universe." He once described himself more humorously, and perhaps most accurately, as, a "poetico-trampo-geologist-botanist and ornithologist-naturalist etc. etc. !!!!" Legendary librarian and author Lawrence Clark Powell (1906-2001), (anticipating an event that was not to occur until 2006), said of him: "If I were to choose a single Californian to occupy the Hall of Fame, it would be this tenacious Scot who became a Californian during the final forty-six years of his life."

As a wilderness explorer, he is renowned for his exciting adventures in California's Sierra Nevada, among Alaska's glaciers, and world wide travels in search of nature's beauty. As a writer, he taught the people of his time and ours the importance of experiencing and protecting our natural heritage. His writings contributed greatly to the creation of Yosemite, Sequoia, Mount Rainier, Petrified Forest, and Grand Canyon National Parks. Dozens of places are named after John Muir, including the Muir Woods National Monument, the John Muir Trail, Muir College (UCSD), and many schools.

His words and deeds helped inspire President Theodore Roosevelt's innovative conservation programs, including establishing the first National Monuments by Presidential Proclamation, and Yosemite National Park by congressional action. In 1892, John Muir and other supporters formed the Sierra Club "to make the mountains glad." John Muir was the Club's first president, an office he held until his death in 1914. Muir's Sierra Club has gone on to help establish a series of new National Parks and a National Wilderness Preservation System.

Muir's last battle to save the second Yosemite, Hetch Hetchy Valley, failed. But that lost battle ultimately resulted in a widespread conviction that our national parks should be held inviolate. Many proposals to dam our national parks since that time have been stopped because of the efforts of citizens inspired by John Muir, and today there are legitimate proposals to restore Hetch Hetchy. John Muir remains today an inspiration for environmental activists everywhere.

John Muir's life reminds us of the important things that just one person can do:

"If you think about all the gains our society has made, from independence to now, it wasn't government. It was activism. People think, 'Oh, Teddy Roosevelt established Yosemite National Park, what a great president.' BS. It was John Muir who invited Roosevelt out and then convinced him to ditch his security and go camping. It was Muir, an activist, a single person." --

John Muir is as relevant today as he was over 100 years ago when he met with President Theodore Roosevelt in Yosemite. Many of today's headlines have Muir to thank for their inspiration.

Changing the world one gift at a time

Do you have any old items collecting dust you pass over everyday just sitting there awaiting a home where it can be used? It's not a dust collector, don't waste its potential is the message from http://www.freecycle.org/ .

The Freecycle Network helps people within the area's all around the world and even in my neck of the woods. A work colleague informed about the site and what it is doing for many people.

It's been very beneficial to many people around me searching for things they have needed and offering up old items of their own. Personally I feel this is a very creative idea for a non profit organization. Just think how many people lives are affected on a daily basis due to this program.

Give your unwanted items to a good home instead of sending them to landfill.

Freecycle is a nonprofit movement that aims to reduce waste, save precious resources and ease the burden on our landfills, while enabling its members to benefit from the strength of a large community.

To show you the type of attention the site has, I have gathered some information on http://www.freecycle.org/ from http://compete.com/ an analytics website.

The unique visitor count during the month of April of 2007 was 300,000 and has been on a steady incline. April of 2008 the numbers have doubled over that 1 year period the unique visitor count has risen to 705,210. I would say that is awesome growth over a 1 year period.

Visit the Freecycle website at http://www.freecycle.org/ to find out more about how to register, and where your nearest group is located. Did I mention it's free to join? What are you waiting for join and do your part -Reduce -Reuse -Recycle .

Green Livin Vodka's Home Remedies

Vodka also has a long history of use as medicine, it's been sold by druggists to cure everything from infertility to colic and the plague. It's true that vodka has a wide range of potential uses beyond serving as a relaxer and social lubricant.

Why would you want to do anything else with vodka but drink it? It is widely available, effective and less toxic than many of the chemical alternatives you might use for these tasks.

Oneof the hazards of enjoying the great outdoors is an encounter with poison ivy, oak or sumac. It can leads to a nasty rash. Unfortunately, the plants are spreading thanks to global warming.

If you immediately pour vodka over an area that has contacted poison ivy, the alcohol will wash away the culprit, urushiol oil, and they won't experience an uncomfortable reaction. Some have stated that the vodka needs to be at least 100 proof to work.

Freshen Laundry

Keep your clothes smelling fresh with vodka! Simply spay your duds with the stuff, then hang to dry in a well-ventilated area. (test a inconspicuois spotfirst to be safe.)

Vodka will kill the odor-causing bacteria, no scent will be left when dry.

Moisten a soft, clean cloth with vodka, then apply a little elbow grease.

Preserve Flowers

Add a few drops of vodka and a teaspoon of sugar to the water in your flower vase. It should help keep your flowers fresh longer. Change out the mixture with fresh ingredientsdaily.

Do Battle with Insects

Who knew that vodka can kill pesky insects? Pour a little of the Vodka in a spray bottle and squirt on the little buggers, or yourself as a repellent.

Jellyfish stingers can pack a powerful, painful punch.

Vodka can also disinfect and alleviate some of the bite of a jellyfish sting.

Try this remedy for healthier, lush hair: Add a shot of vodka to a 12-ounce bottle of shampoo.

Vodka is better than both shampoo and conditioner.

Use a recycled spray bottle of course with some bottom-shelf vodka.

Spay on, then let sit for 15 minutes. Scrub away with an old toothbrush

Make a Soothing Tincture

Did you know that herbalists have used lavender it for generations to ease aches and pains?

Fill a glass jar with fresh lavender flowers, then top off with vodka. Seal the lid tightly and place in the sun for three days.

Strain the resulting liquid through filter, and poof! You have a homemade remedy to rub into aches and pains.

Ease a Toothache

Try swishing a shot of vodka over the affected area. It can help disinfect, and should numb some of the pain in your gums.

Fenway Park in Boston Installs Solar Heating System

The 37-foot Green Monster wall at Boston’s Fenway Park is famous for reducing a batter’s chance at hitting a home run, but now the park is getting something even greener that is going to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of the park by 18 tons per year.

The famous baseball stadium that has hosted ten World Series has just installed a solar heating system that consists of 28 Heliodyne solar hot water collectors and four 400-gallon storage tanks.

The Red Sox will be the first team in Major League Baseball to have a solar thermal system at their ballpark.

This eco-friendly makeover is part of Boston’s 2-year citywide initiative to support alternative energy sources. The initiative, called the Solar Boston program, costs $600,000, and its goal is to increase the city's solar power output by 50 times its current level by 2015.

The solar panels were manufactured by Heliodyne Inc. of Richmond, California, a company that develops top-performing solar hot water systems.

They were installed by groSolar, a company that provides photovoltaic (PV) cells for homes and businesses.

The solar-heated water will not only be used for the stadium, but also for all the restaurants located on the park’s lower level.

You can read the entire article here.

The use of this solar-heated water system will reduce the park’s average gas consumption by one-third.

Maybe this initiative will inspire the Red Sox players to go green on a personal level and help off set there own carbon foot print.

This is a great way to save energy, and we hope other organizations will adopt the initiative.

He's Got the Remedy

Jason Mraz sings the praises of a simpler life

Jason Mraz is strumming up support for sustainability.

Jason Mraz may still be the Geek in the pink, but these days, the pop-rock-rhymer is hoping to distance himself from his cigarette-puffin', girl-chasin' past and move toward a simpler, more sustainable life.

Since returning from his Mr. A-Z tour two years ago, Mraz has focused his attention on greener, non-music-related pastures. Last year, he partnered with two friends to launch Blend Apparel, a line of bamboo T-shirts. This year, he'll publish his first book, printed on Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper that's 20 percent recycled and wood-free. The book also happens to be word-free: it's a collection of Polaroids, a medium he loves because "you actually have to think about what you're going to shoot ... it keeps me at a slow pace."

We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things, a new album by Mraz.
Despite his best efforts, Mraz's pace has quickened in recent months, as he's been traveling by biodiesel bus in support of his new album We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things. He's partnered with the good folks at Reverb to help make the tour as sustainable as possible and provide an educational element for his fans.

Sara van Schagen a writer for http://www.grist.org caught up with Mraz during the East Coast leg of his tour to discuss his recent lifestyle-180. For a guy known for his upbeat, quick-witted lyrics, the conversation was surprisingly zen, but Mraz showed palpable enthusiasm as we chatted about his love for California coastlines, Barack Obama, and his new Sigg water bottle.

Memorial Day Green Uniforms to Green Careers

No matter what you have come to think of the battle in Iraq, our veterans deserve far more than they have received.

They should be given full educational funding and there should be much more support to help them readjust when they return to civilian life here in the US. Addressing their emotional, mental and economic well being is the very least we can do to return the efforts of our all volunteer forces.

Have you heard of Green Collar Vets? They’re one of our favorite groups that we would like to see succeed in a big way.

Their motto is from green uniforms to green careers. They are finding returning veterans good jobs in green industries. These are good paying jobs and they are part of the solution.

My favorite saying these days is, “Only YOU can prevent the next oil WAR.” In our society few people know the tragedy and savagery of war better than our returning vets and they appreciate when we do our part here to make sure that next time there won’t be a war that must be fought for no reason than over oil because of what our generation failed to do today.

We need to change as a nation in terms of our energy sources, and we need to do this quickly.

Returning vets ought to be part of this cause that is larger than ourselves and all about green patriotism.

Georgia Richey of Green Collar Vets wrote , “We are having so much fun meeting the green-minded vets in our area, the green business owners, and connecting the two. We have connected with the wind energy industry in West Texas and with some energy efficiency opportunities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. We hope to have another chapter on each coast in the north early next year. It’s exciting to grow a new business, as you well know.”

Justin Timberlake to Make a Greener Golf Green

Celebrity Dirt on Justin Timberlake to Make a Greener Golf Green
JT-branded eco golf course and charity tournament are in the works
By Colleen Kane

Justin Timberlake has just signed on for a partnership with the sports/entertainment/media conglomerate IMG, which will lead to a JT-branded eco-golf course and the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Open tournament this October in Las Vegas.

The golf course will be in Justin's hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. It was rescued from the auction block by JT, his mother, and his stepfather last year. Now in the works are plans for LEED-certified facilities, and more. From an article in the Memphis Daily News:

"Also anticipated is... a renewable energy field and a walking trail with educational placards and seating for the public to learn about responsible energy and natural resource usage," wrote Eric Criswell, of the engineering firm Davis Patrikios Criswell Inc.

Justin's other new role is as the co-star of Madonna's new hit "4 Minutes," which has the line, "four minutes to save the world." The real-life task of saving the world isn't as easy as one eco-centric golf course, but at least there may soon be less toxic lawn chemicals seeping into the Memphis ecosystem.
